PRODUCER NOTES FOR 'MURDER AT THE BLACK DOG TAVERN'

The American Association of Community Theatre is a member organization of over 1500 community theaters, of which Kenai Performers is one.  In 2022 and 2024, board president Terri Burdick and then treasurer Jodene McAuliffe applied to be a producing theater for a NewPlayFest winning play.  Although we were not selected in 2022, we were selected for this round.

Once the top 14 plays were determined from the competition, which had generated over 1500 submissions of original new plays, our local production team read the scripts and selected our top 4.  Between February and June of 2025, the 6 top scripts were assigned to the 6 selected theaters, and we happily received our number one pick!

Our responsibility as a producing theater is to bring the playwright in for a workshop during the final month of production, as well as for opening weekend of the world premiere of their award-winning play!  Also, for opening weekend, representatives from AACT and Dramatic Publishing will be arriving.  On Sunday August 2, we will be hosting a special Gala-Dinner at Kenai Performers’ theater, 44045 Kalifornsky Beach Rd, where we will receive an award for having accomplished this remarkable feat.
